  • Supporting staff to teach functional English and maths: Kirklees College, which has been committed to functional skills for some time, describes its work on upskilling teachers in maths, so that they can teach functional mathematics more effectively.
  • Delivering functional skills: lessons learnt from the pilot (QCDA, 2009): Most of the case studies in this set are school-based, with the following from the post-16 sector, and it may be worth looking at school-focused material for ideas:
    • managing the introduction of functional skills – developing a plan to implement cross-college functional skills in a general FE college. South Downs College of Further Education
    • laying the foundations citywide – a local authority’s approach to implanting functional skills across schools and colleges. Plymouth Local Authority
    • a flexible approach – an approach to staff CPD in a training organisation. Zodiac Training
    • moving on from key skills – a general FE college’s experiences of the transition from key skills to functional skills. College of North East London.
