Section 2. Where are you now? Where do you want to be?

Self check and action planning

The government’s refreshed Skills for Life strategy, Skills for Life: Changing lives (DIUS, 2009), intends that by 2011 all Skills Funding Agency-funded providers will offer embedded literacy, language and numeracy. It is important to understand the context and rationale for such a commitment.

An important step in determining your organisation’s priority development actions is to reflect on where you are and where you want to be.

The LLN Health Check is a downloadable tool for providers to use to review their current structures and processes and plan future development work.

Useful guidance and assessment questions to support you in embedding can be found in the booklet Improving Learner Success by Embedding LLN (p.36)

Embedded delivery – Where are you now? Where do you want to be? includes a simplified 'Taking Stock' checklist for you to use to start the process of self checking and action planning. It also includes a link to the LLN Health Check: A Whole Organisation Approach to improving quality (Revised and updated March 2010).

How do you maintain a sustainable approach to embedded delivery throughout the organisation?
Once established, effective embedding will need to be sustained through ongoing planned professional development and focused observation of teaching and learning.
